Inlet softball is defeated in championship contest

By Bob Gordon
For the Express

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the Inlet women’s softball team played in the league championship game in Speculator.
The team was fired up and ready for a second shot at the team from Ohio. But it would not be Inlet’s night as Ohio came away with a 9-3 victory.  Inlet could only muster one hit, a single by Karen Hoskins, in the top of the first. Ohio came to bat and quickly put up three runs. Ohio threatened to score again in the second, but some tough defens ...

Inlet wins semi-final match up, will face Ohio for championship

By Bob Gordon
For the Express

On Tuesday, Aug. 10, the Inlet Hot Screamers softball team traveled to North Creek to face Inn on Gore in a semi-final playoff game. As was the case during the regular season game, won by Inlet 3-1, this game was a low scoring, strong defensive affair.  And once again, Inlet came away with an impressive 5-2 victory, securing a trip to the championship game.
Inlet put the home team and top seed Inn on Gore in an early hole, scoring three runs in the ...

Inlet softball team takes over first place

And then there were none.
On Tuesday, July 20, the Inlet women’s softball team took on league leading and undefeated Inn on Gore at Inlet and, bouncing back from their first loss of the season the previous week, the Hot Screamers handed Gore their first defeat in a tight defensive game, winning 3-1.
The win not only secured a place for Inlet in next month's playoffs, but also gave them sole possession of first place in the league going into their final regular season game.
The game started ...

History & Heritiage - 08/31/2010
by Ken Sprague

From the front page of The Adirondack Arrow on December 3, 1931:
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Christmas is just around the corner. There are but 18 more shopping days. Probably a great many of us have done very little of our Christmas buying. We have heard a lot about “depression” but it’s our private opinion that Santa Claus fails to take much if any stock in such talk. It is possible that presents will be more practicable than in some previous years but take it from me this is one time in the whole yea ...

Eat, pray, give thanks
by Leslie Willard

Friday night is “date night” for Egan and I (although….with no kids in the house, isn’t every night “date night?”). Most Fridays, when we aren’t cocktailing it up in the hood, we head to the beloved Strand Theatre to give Bob and Helen a hard time, and to catch the latest Hollywood releases. Last Friday, Egan and I took in “Eat, Pray, Love”, and we loved all 2 hours of it (despite Egan complaining that his butt was falling asleep). Usually, when I read a book and then see the movie adaptation, I ...

Bighead bellyaches
by Stan Ernst

The quintessential Adirondack know-it-all (QUAK) declares the 2010 summer an interminable fiasco. Lotta loose change, lotta people, lotta noise, Marilynn Monroe returns in the role of Express Editor, and the Inlet Hot Screamers women’s softball team won our hearts, but lost the championship game to a bunch of buckeyes from Ohio.  Rats!
Dear Mr. Bighead, according to nationwide voter approval surveys, our nonsectarian, anchor baby President is receiving failing marks for ...

Part II Fishing then and now
by Mart Allen

In last week’s column I attempted to answer grandson Tecwyn’s request to equate fishing quality from the time I was his age until today. I explained that there were two parts to the answer. One was the numbers and quality of the fish, and the other comparing the gear. The first part was covered in last week’s column.
My recollections of the numbers and quality of the fish in the forties are not too far different than they are today. However, the memories of the quality and convenience of the g ...

Power to the people?

By Joseph Chilelli
For the Express

At the end of April, I, with the support of the “Concerned Citizens For A Better Herkimer County,” sent a letter to our Herkimer and Oneida County State representatives asking them to initiate a bill which would give the people of this state the ability to ask for a public referendum on any capital improvement project with a cost of $5 million or more funded by taxpayer money. The basic premise is that it’s our money and we should have a say in how our poli ...

My cup runneth over with happiness

My cup runneth over with happiness as our Adirondack friends, family, and neighbors joined us in this paddle to celebrate my 80th birthday. We would like to share this picture with your readers to show that the beautiful Adirondacks encourages “a strong mind in a strong body, even at 80.” The Ritter’s hosted a cookout for all to enjoy. On Sunday, the Black’s returned the favor by hosting a brunch for all at the Buffalo Head Restaurant.
In the love of the m ...

Letters to the Editor - 08/31/2010

During these economically challenging times ...

To the editor:
This letter is in response to a letter from Donald and Donna Gerace that was published in your July 20, edition. It is my opinion that the letter misrepresents any actions the Town of Inlet may be considering and makes irrational, exaggerated claims on the possible repercussions relative to other private property owners.
Inlet is looking to enforce a long standing easement along the edge of a public channel, supporting foot tra ...

Family is grateful for first pizza

At Sharky’s Pizza in Old Forge, they do more than deliver a great pizza. Our grandson Ethan is seven years old and very allergic to all dairy products. As a result there are many foods he is unable to enjoy, especially when dining out. Until recently, Ethan had never had a pizza from a pizzeria. When Sharky heard about this, he volunteered to make a dairy free pizza using special non-dairy cheese. They went to the extreme of cleaning a special area of any dairy residue to ensure that no dairy wo ...
